Ululāʻau o Kalamawaiʻawaʻawa is a grassroots, community-driven organization dedicated to restoring the native forests of Hawaiʻi and strengthening the relationship between Kanaka and ʻāina. Rooted in the storied lands of Kalamawaiʻawaʻawa, our work honors the knowledge of our kūpuna while embracing sustainable, modern practices that ensure these ecosystems thrive for generations to come.

Once choked by Guinea Grass, Maile Pilau, and Cat’s Claw — now alive with kalo and other thriving plants.

Our ʻōlena beds yielded 130 pounds of raw root this season — a powerful reminder of how deeply our ancestors relied on this plant for medicine, ceremony, and daily life.

During heavy rains, the waters of Mauna Lei flow down from Mauna Loa, carrying the life of the mountain through our ʻāina.
